The Living Aura: A sensation of Bio-electromagnetic field in space

Introduction

During the 1st term, after observing one hundred people in Soho area, the most striking result to emerge from the data was human behaviours and how the consequence made the space so different along time. Therefore, the relationship between behaviour and atmosphere has been the subject to study, and also Bio-electromagnetic Field is believed as a significant element for the alterations.

What

Bio-electromagnetic Field is defined as an attraction force produced by living cells, tissues and organisms, affected by the elements of the surrounding environment or by people themselves. The action of potentials could be seen as the electric currents and the cell membrane potential which flow in nerves and muscles, for example. It is believed that the field exists in all living creatures, whether plants or animals. It has been mentioned in Future Science, “John White lists ninety-seven different cultures over the face of globe…Life energy fields have been known in China and India for over five thousand years.” (White and Krippner, 1977, quoted in Brennan, 1993, p. 3). Even though there are difficulties to prove the existence of the field as it is invisible and untouched, several studies have been revealed that there are some possibilities to substantiate the theory. By way of illustration, Kirlian photography is a good example to demonstrate the existence of Bio-electromagnetic Field. According to the Skeptic’s Dictionary, due to a high voltage, a coloured halo or coronal discharge is displayed as “a physical manifestation of the spiritual aura or life force which allegedly surrounds each living thing.” (Carrroll 2003) It is undoubtedly true that the fields are unseen but exist and accompany with all creatures

Why

Bio-electromagnetic Field can be also seen as a sort of electromagnetic force which is able to attract and repel the aura in order to affect a simple object or the atmosphere of a space. As evidence of this, the project, Beacon, designed by Chris O’Shea 2009, is an interactive installation with “an array of emergency beacon lights that interacts with visitors, tracking their movement through the space.” When the tension of a space is changed by the attractive or repellent force, both the aura of the space and the emotion of the person are altered. The situation might happen all the time in our daily life; however, the field is hardly to be noticed, which however, can affect or be affected by humans, being another crucial issue to change our life. As the result, Bio-electromagnetic Field should be concern as one of the most important influences between human and space. The aim of this paper is to address recent research into Bio-electromagnetic Field, with the breakthroughs which might enhance the thought of architecture. Overall, although there are few studies combining Bio-electromagnetic Field with architectural research, it could be a different way to understand the relationship between living creatures and spaces.

How - The methodology

It is considerably true that the visualisation of Bio-electromagnetic Field might be difficult to be expressed while the energy is invisible and even hard to be felt physically. The ambition of my study is to use the skills of photography, films or interactive media in order to develop and animate a situation in order to record the Influences produced by Bio-electromagnetic Fields.

The Definition of Bioelectromagnetism and Bioelectromagnetics

FARADAY CHAIR, HERTZIAN TALES, ANTHONY DUNNE, 1994-97

The Definition of Bioelectromagnetism

Bioelectromagnetism refers to the electrical, magnetic or electromagnetic fields produced by living cells, tissues or organisms. Examples include the cell membrane potential and the electric currents that flow in nerves and muscles, as a result of action potentials.

Biological cells use bioelectricity to store metabolic energy, to do work or trigger internal changes, and to signal one another. Bioelectromagnetism is the electric current produced by action potentials along with the magnetic fields they generate through the phenomenon of electromagnetism.

The theory is an aspect of all living things, including all plants and animals. Some animals have acute bioelectric sensors, and others, such as migratory birds, are believed to navigate in part by orienteering with respect to the Earth's magnetic field. Other animals, such as the electric eel, are able to generate large electric fields outside their bodies.

Moreover, bioelectromagnetism involves the interaction of ions. There are multiple categories of Bioelectromagnetism such as brainwaves, which neurophysiology studies, where bioelectromagnetic fluctuations of voltage between parts of the cerebral cortex are detectable.

The Definition of Bioelectromagnetics

Bioelectromagnetics is the study of how electromagnetic fields interact with and influence biological processes. Common areas of investigation include the mechanism of animal migration and navigation using the geomagnetic field, studying the potential effects of man-made sources of electromagnetic fields, such as those produced by the power distribution system and mobile phones, and developing new therapies to treat various conditions.

Bio-Electromagnetic Field

I start to think about if there is anything between people, affected by the elements of surrounding or by people themselves. It could be a kind of the third space which we have never noticed but exist in our life. For example, the Earth is like a giant magnet, surrounded by a magnetic field, has been chinging for thousands years. However, we hardly realize the changing because we cannot observe it by our eyes.

In these figures and animations, the magnetic field from 1590 to 1980 is given by the GUFM-1 model of Jackson et al. (2000), while the field from 1980 to 2010 is given by the 10th generation of the International Geomagnetic Reference Field.

Bio-electromagnetic field which is defined as an eletromagnetic field produced by living biological organisms. The theory has been utilized by Chinese Qigong for thousands of years. Chinese people believe that this field affect the air around us, whether through minute vibratory force or very faint eletromagnetic radiation or by various other means. The aura can be said to be both the field itself. as well as the effects within the field. For instance, while we cannot see the wind, we can observe its effects as it blows the leaves of trees. Moreover, the air does exist and might cause a kind of space.

Flute

Flute
New Zealand, Pacific Ocean
Wood
L8.0, D3.0 cm
Donated by William Bragge 1869
Ethno Oc.5369

A drawing by an artist on Captain James Cook's first Pacific voyage indicates that this Maori flute was collected during the 1769-1770 exploration of New Zealand by HMS Endeavour. It has four playing holes and a small loop for a suspension cord. This type of flute is played by blowing either through the mouth or through the nose at the curved end: playing by the mouth produces a resonant sound, while playing by the nose gives a softer, sobbing effect. Historically, flute music and chanted poems helped to soothe the pain of tattooing. Musical instruments were seen to control and celebrate the air or breath (te ha) which, in the ancient Maori world, was considered to be the essence of life.

The Observation of People

Human behaviours around the two sites are the most interesting things for me as I mentioned before. Because of this, I start to do a survey, talking with 100 people around the areas from the morning to the night in order to observe the differences of human behaviours.

There are always a lot of pasengers when I walk on Oxford Street and Charing Cross Road but 90% of them are uneasy to chat with because they might try to chatch the tube or meet someone else. On the other hand, around Soho Square, people seems relax and friendly and enjoy their lunch break in the afternoon. When I talked to them, most of them would like to help me to do the survey and had a positive response. However, during the night, only few passengers walk around this area and the square is shut down, which made the place become cold, unfriendly and even dangerous.

In the morning and afternoon, one side of the site, which faces to Piccadilly Circus, is busy with passengers whereas the other side between Air Street, Brewer Street and Glasshouse Street seems quieter with the noisy from cranes and workers. For me, it is quite difficult to do the survey as most people just pass through this area and have no time to stop for my research. Nevertheless, those streets around the site become busy and the atmosphere has changed dramatically. There are many elements which result in the difference, for example alcohol, the artificial lights and the music from the pubs. People seems totally different from the morning and love to talk with each others on the street.
